FE Sector Anti-Terrorism Consultation Document

Posted by LibeRaCe on February 12, 2008

The BBC reported on 11th February that Further education colleges are being warned that “segregated communities” on campuses can cause conflict and stifle free speech.” This comes as a response to Bill Rammell’s recent consultation document declaration that colleges face a “serious but not widespread” threat from “Al-Qaeda-influenced terrorism”.

The document -  The Role of FE Providers in Promoting Community Cohesion, Fostering Shared Values and Preventing Violent Extremeism Colleges - states that FE Institutions must foster “openness, free debate and tolerance” on campus.

The report, which will lead to formal guidance, is the latest phase in efforts to prevent campus extremism in higher and further education. It also suggests staff should be aware of the negative influences of outside speakers, inflammatory literature and monitor inappropriate websites being viewed by students.  The consulation itself will continue until May 08.

However, the consultation has not been welcomed by some sectors - The UCU raised concerns over certain campus groups feeling targeted and the ‘focus of attention’.  The Guardian also reports today that FE colleges will be expected to carry out a Threat Risk Assessment using a government toolkit - but will this discourage students from attending certain colleges?

What do you think???
