Young ‘dreaming of living abroad’

A survey conducted by PCP Research found that seven out of ten young people want to live and work abroad when they leave education.

The survey of 560 UK students from 11 to 18 years of age found that, although they had a yearning to live and work abroad, 58% of them didn’t speak a second language, but 71% wished they could.

The research seems to confirm that schools need to provide young people with encouragement to learn new languages, which goes against the removal of compulsory language classes for 14-16 year olds in 2004. GCSE results have since shown a reduction in pupils taking languages. Westminster have now targeted primary school pupils, by giving them the chance to learn a language by 2010.

Web Quest – Week 8

Welcome intrepid Web 2.0 adventurers!

You did it, you have now reached Week 8! Here you’ll get to socialise and network with your fellow adventurers.

Your challeges this week:

Task 1: Find out more about Social Networking with the Quest tutorial. How would you define a social networking site? What does social networking mean in the real world? Have a look at Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. These sites provide essentially the same service, but look very different. How easy was it to find personal information about strangers? Why was this and what can you do to protect your identity?

Task 2: Set up a Facebook account and join a group. The Library staff will be using a Facebook group to communicate – have you received your invitation yet? See the LRC del.ici.ous/llandrillo_library for links to staying safe online (under Citizenship and ICT categories and the be_safe_online tag).
