Social Networking can harm Children’s Brains

Posted by LibeRaCe on March 27, 2009

Well that was the message in the media at the end of February. Apparently using social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Bebo are rewiring our children’s brains, and i thought it was part of the process of becoming a teenager.

Oxford University Neuroscientist Susan Greenfield believes repeated exposure to these sites, and computer games,  will rewire the brain and will effectively infantise the brain because of the supposed limited attention span required to engage with them. She also makes some more claims about the lack of face to face conversation.

facebook3 And this week another study carried out by Taiwanese researchers on 692 university students, suggests that blogging can have a beneficial effect on them. They found that those that used blogs to share information about feelings, emotions and experiences also reported a greater sense of social belonging and well-being.
