Social Networking can harm Children’s Brains

Posted by LibeRaCe on March 27, 2009

Well that was the message in the media at the end of February. Apparently using social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Bebo are rewiring our children’s brains, and i thought it was part of the process of becoming a teenager.

Oxford University Neuroscientist Susan Greenfield believes repeated exposure to these sites, and computer games,  will rewire the brain and will effectively infantise the brain because of the supposed limited attention span required to engage with them. She also makes some more claims about the lack of face to face conversation.

facebook3 And this week another study carried out by Taiwanese researchers on 692 university students, suggests that blogging can have a beneficial effect on them. They found that those that used blogs to share information about feelings, emotions and experiences also reported a greater sense of social belonging and well-being.

learnpsychology.net

knowledge is power

This web page, hosted by a collective of psychology-related information sites, provides an arena for A-level psychologists in particular to further their knowledge of basic theoretical and research-related concepts in psychology. The site includes a glossary, a book store, links to news feeds, and individual articles on topics such as Asperger’s syndrome. This site should be useful for teachers and A-Level Psychology students.

Young Lives

Posted by LibeRaCe on November 21, 2007

Modern inner city life is the dramatic setting for both of these fictional novels, but the stories could have come straight from the headlines we see every day ….

 http://liberace.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/kidulthood.jpg?w=90&h=120

Based on the hit film by the same name, this book follows a group of teenagers and describes their everyday lives.  The reason they have been allowed off school exposes the true and terrifying effects of bullying and gang culture. This is a book about choices and what influences people to make decisions for the best or for the worst……..

….

….

 http://liberace.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/teacher.jpg?w=84&h=129

The main character in this book witnesses his teachers’ murder by two pupils in his school. Jackson can’t talk to a counsellor but is filled with a need to understand why this happened and begins his own investigation. The more he finds out about the boys who did it, the more he comes to understand the reasons why this terrible crime happened….

…….

There are many organizations in the UK that understand young people and try to help them break away from a life of crime and give them a voice. A few starting points would be - Da Vision , Citizenship Foundation , GameOver , NCH , UK Youth Parliment .
