You have now reached Week 6, where you’ll learn about RSS feeds and how to make the most of them.

Your challenges this week:

Task 1: Learn more about RSS feeds  and their uses with the Quest Tutorial. We will use Pageflakes.com to find out more RSS feeds. Learn all about Pageflakes with this video. In what ways could libraries use RSS for students? Glasgow and Loughborough are both experimenting with RSS. And don’t forget your own Library Blog (see the newsfeeds to the right of the screen?). How could tutors use RSS in a class blog?

Task 2: Have a look at your favourites menu to see if any of the bookmarked sites have their own RSS feeds. Why not set up a PageFlakes account to keep track of all the headlines? If you want to explore Pageflakes without setting up an account, leave a comment on this post and the adminisrators will give you temporary editing access.

 Your challenges this week:

Task 1: Learn more about wikis with this tutorial - you have actually been using a wiki every week so far! What is the main difference between a webpage and a wiki page? Learn more about wikis and their uses, including how libraries can use them with patrons. This article from O’Reilly.com is a little dated, but does give a practical example of using a wiki for project management.

Task 2: Would you like to set up your own wiki? Learn more with the PBwiki guides in the Library Moodle pages. You will need to read both version 1 and 2. Alternatively, explore the colloaborative features of a wiki in the Quest Sandpit.

You have now reached Week 4, where you’ll learn about digital photosharing and Flickr.

Your challenges this week:

Task 1 : You can become more familiar with photosharing by looking at this short tutorial. Do you know how to access your digital photos to share them? Have a look at the ITW guide in the Library Moodle pages. We will use Flickr to see how photos can be shared - they have a useful tour of the site. Learn how to search for photos with this short video.

Task 2 : You have a choice this week - you can either set up your own free Flickr account  (you will be re-directed to Yahoo) and upload some photos to it. If you do, tag them as ‘Web Quest’ so they can be viewed easily. You might like to watch this short tutorial first.

OR

Practice downloading photos onto your H:Drive using the ITW card readers. Experiment with your blog and add a picture to your reflective post for this week using the WordPress Image Gallery or the Flickr Insert Tool .

A US court has ruled that Google must divulge the viewing habits of every user who has ever watched any video on YouTube. The decision comes as part of Google’s legal battle with Viacom over allegations of copyright infringement.

Youtube banned in Turkey since May - article from Reporters Without Frontiers

Orders issued by three Ankara courts has blocked access to Youtube and other photosharing sites since may 2008, despite the material which sparked the controvery being removed from the sites. Youtube has also been banned this year by Pakistan , Indonesia and China.

Your challenges this week:

Task 1: Learn more about tagging and how people use it. Explore the world of del.icio.us with this short tutorial. You can also read Us.ef.ul, a beginners guide to del.icio.us or would you like to watch a podcast tutorial all about del.icio.us instead? 

Task 2: Have a look at the Library’s del.icio.us account. What would you add or delete from the site? Are the categories and headings suitable? What do the red numbers under the headings mean? Do you want to add any of your saved favourites to the site? Leave a request comment on this post to get access.

Task 3: Now that you understand tagging, tag each of your own blog posts with the phrase ‘Web Quest’ (as we have done) from now on.

Congratulations on getting to the next stage of the quest. This week you will be exploring the world of blogging - what it’s used for, how to do it and you’ll also be creating your own blog to start your personal Quest Log.

Your challenges this week:

Task 1 : Take a look at this introduction to blogging and read the short tutorial on setting up your blog.

Task 2: Set up your blog, register your blog address with the programme administrators and post your first messages! Why not write about what you think might be the easiest and hardest things for you to learn or write about something in the news that interests you this week.

You have now achieved your first milestone! This blog will now become a record or log of your learning. Each time you complete a task you need to record it in a post and this will be checked weekly by the quest administrators.
