Web Quest – Week 8

Posted by LibeRaCe on August 4, 2008

Welcome intrepid Web 2.0 adventurers!

You did it, you have now reached Week 8! Here you’ll get to socialise and network with your fellow adventurers.

Your challeges this week:

Task 1: Find out more about Social Networking with the Quest tutorial. How would you define a social networking site? What does social networking mean in the real world? Have a look at Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. These sites provide essentially the same service, but look very different. How easy was it to find personal information about strangers? Why was this and what can you do to protect your identity?

Task 2: Set up a Facebook account and join a group. The Library staff will be using a Facebook group to communicate – have you received your invitation yet? See the LRC del.ici.ous/llandrillo_library for links to staying safe online (under Citizenship and ICT categories and the be_safe_online tag).

Don’t forget, you need to record your achievements in your blog!

If you need more help, ask your colleagues by leaving a comment on this post or check out the guides on the Library Moodle page.

I already have a personal facebook account so this week’s web quest wasn’t too challenging thankfully! It looks like facebook have made some changes to the layout since I created my last account but you can go back to the old layout if you wish.

It was very easy to find personal information about strangers on there but I have restricted access to my profile to friends only in the privacy settings.

“Coleg Llandrillo Library” is first the group I have joined on Facebook. It will be interesting to see if this takes off.

Its a shame the web quest is coming to an end. I was just starting to get into the swing of it all as well! Hopefully I will be able to build on what I have learnt and keep adding new content to my blog.

Don’t hold your breath Cez (can i call you Cez), you’ll be glad to know that these social networking sites are just the beginning! Yes it is very easy to find personal information about people on Facebook, you only have to look at mine, whoops!I’ve noticed you have joined my rogues gallery; I’m sure some people will be interested in some of the characters on there!!
I agree, the Coleg Llandrillo Library group could prove to be very interesting once it takes off. not sure of the destination though!
