A warm welcome to all our new and returning students this year!
We’ve made a few changes to the library since you’ve been away – all designed to make it a more accessible space and easier for you find what you need.
New Quick Reference Shelf Signage
(includes the main shelf number and some cover art of the recommended texts from your reading lists)
Keep an eye out for these little beggars popping up around the library. These are QR codes and if you have a smart phone and the right app, you can take a photo of the image and it will lead to you the catalogue or a book review or a website or ….. well you never know.
New Study Layout
Canny observers will notice that we’ve moved the study section lock, stock and carell to the other end of the library. Now you’ll be nearer the enquiry desks, resources and catalogue (and, ok fair enough, we’ll be able to keep a better eye on the messers. I know, we spoil all your fun)
New Information Point
We have been blessed with a new fancy schmantzy TV and we’ll use it to screen library induction information, answers to your FAQ’s, advtertise new stock and all manner of other useful info. We’ve also added a lot of new graphic novel and manga titles this year and you’ll find them in this area too. All the books aren’t just on the shelves to make the place look pretty – they are for you to read and borrow, so get in there an make a mess.

The Digital Ethnography group at Kansas State University highlighted the above paragraph from a reflection on teaching in 1898. How things have moved on ….. or have they?
Fast forward over 100 years and instead of telegrams, what about (SMS) text messaging, (IM) instant messaging and Twitter posts – can you harness these everyday technologies to get your students to think about how and what they are writing? Can they write a story synopsis, a one line review, an emergency announcement or an online advertisement?
If you want to know more, contact your library on ext.342 or email@example.com to find out more practical uses for Web 2.0 technology in the classroom.

Congratulations to three Coleg Llandrillo Denbigh students for winning the reader development competition. Niame Traore is an ESOL student and used our Oxford Bookworms collection to practice her english reading skills. Mathew Thomas McDonald and Helen Williams are both on the STEPS program and have been reading as part of their classroom activities. Niame and Mathew both won an MP3 video player and Helen has won £20 worth of book tokens!
Niame Traore receiving her challenge prize!
All three students took part in the Six Book Challenge 2010. The challenge was to read and review six books. Students could choose any six books they liked (at any level) to enter the challenge and needed to send in all six reviews to the library. Coleg Llandrillo Rhos winners to be announced shortly!
Over half of adults (56%) have literacy skills below the level of a good GCSE (NAO, Skills for Life: Progress in Improving Adult Literacy and Numeracy, 2008). “Our stubborn national skills problems show we need new ways to tackle literacy issues,” said Miranda McKearney, Director of The Reading Agency. “We launched the Six Book Challenge in 2008, and I wish we’d started it years ago! It’s a deceptively simple, motivational scheme that has a tremendous impact on people’s lives.’
9,000 adults took part in the Six Book Challenge in 2009, up 25% on 2008. 70% of library services across the UK ran the scheme as well as colleges, adult and community education centres, workplaces and prisons. 90% of participants said they feel more confident about reading after taking part, and tutors say that the Challenge improves learners’ confidence, increases their motivation and helps them develop a reading habit.
Author Mike Gayle, who is Patron of the Six Book Challenge and a keen supporter of adult literacy initiatives, said: “Anything that encourages adult learners to get stuck into a good read has got to be a good thing in my book! I’m proud to be involved in this terrific initiative that is making a real difference to those who have felt excluded from the world of books.”
